The Blueprint: Building a Band in the Live Music Capital

West 22nd went from college jam sessions to headlining shows, a jump many indie bands struggle to make. Formed in 2022 at the University of Texas, the Austin-based group started by playing covers at parties where the music was secondary. Over time, that changed. They moved from background noise to the main act, building a crowd that now comes just to see them.

The band, made up of Logan Madsen (vocals), Jeremy Acheta (lead guitar), Liam Mackle (drums), Jet Beck (bass), and Gabe Acevedo (rhythm guitar), found its identity through a mix of shared ambition and experimentation.

Madsen and Acevedo had long talked about forming a band, but it was their meeting at university that made it real. From there, each member brought different influences, helping shape a sound that stays rooted in indie rock while branching into acoustic, mellow, and high-energy styles.

The ACL Milestone: Making University History

Early performances leaned heavily on covers, especially from bands like The Strokes, which helped them connect with audiences and refine their stage presence. As confidence grew, original songs started to take center stage.

Word spread quickly across campus and into the wider Austin music scene, where competition is strong and attention is hard to earn. Still, their mix of catchy songwriting and energetic live shows helped them stand out, leading to gigs not just in Austin but also in nearby cities like Dallas and Houston.

A major milestone came in 2024 when West 22nd performed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. That appearance carried extra weight, as they became the first band made up of University of Texas students to play the festival. It marked a turning point, signaling that they had moved beyond local buzz into a broader spotlight.

Their music shows that same growth. After a few singles and an EP, they released their first album, "Nowhere To Be," in April. It came together while they were balancing school and band work. As they grew closer as a group, more listeners started connecting with their sound and lyrics.

Crowds, Connection, and the North American Tour

Despite the momentum, the band remains grounded about the challenges of the industry. Rather than chasing trends, they focus on authenticity by writing music they genuinely enjoy instead of trying to fit a mold. That approach has helped them maintain a strong connection with fans, especially in live settings.

Their upcoming show at The District Bar shows that connection. Madsen often interacts with the crowd, even stepping off stage to sing with fans, making each show feel shared. As part of their North American tour, with sold-out stops in Sacramento and Portland, the band keeps reaching more listeners.

Even with bigger venues and larger audiences, their mindset has not changed. At its core, West 22nd still sees itself as a group of friends making music together, an attitude that keeps their performances approachable and their identity intact as they move forward.
