Tropical Soft Rock Innovators Tipa Tipo Merge Latin Grooves and Yacht Rock on Sophomore Album Arquetipas

Music has always offered artists opportunities to explore different cultures, sounds and creative identities. Blending traditional rhythms with contemporary influences can produce unexpected combinations that appeal to listeners beyond geographical boundaries.

Brooklyn-based band Tipa Tipo have embraced this approach through their colourful musical style and playful arrangements. Their second album, Arquetipas, arrived on October 2, bringing together South American influences, North American soft rock and an extensive collection of guest collaborators.

Synthesizing Global Musical Cultures

Featuring 12 tracks, Arquetipas combines cumbia, salsa, yacht rock and easy-listening melodies with layered harmonies and syncopated percussion. The record explores different musical textures while maintaining an upbeat atmosphere, supported by warm keyboards, guitar arrangements and occasional saxophone passages.

Opening track Prisma, featuring Pahua, introduces the album's vibrant direction through intersecting rhythms and melodies. Singer and keyboardist Adele Fournet drew inspiration from gemstones and the way light refracts into different colours, hoping to translate those visual experiences into music. Other tracks include Sombra with Natisú, No Me Fui featuring Cheo and All Fall with Fe Baca.

Tracing Multicultural Roots and Artistic Backgrounds

Tipa Tipo consists of Adele Fournet, guitarist and vocalist Felipe Wurst, and drummer and percussionist Jordan Leong Auber. Fournet and Wurst first met in Peru and played together in a band. They later moved to Brooklyn, where they teamed up with Auber to establish Tipa Tipo. Their shared musical interests have shaped an approach that combines Latin American traditions with North American pop and rock influences.

Each composition experiments with different sonic colours, reflecting the group's ambition to bring their diverse musical experiences together. Fournet also created the album's original collage artwork, extending its bright visual identity beyond the recordings themselves. Their stage outfits similarly reflect this aesthetic, frequently incorporating vivid shades of pink, yellow and turquoise.

Studio Experimentation Definitively Shapes the Sound

Production took place at Yellow Studios and Honey Jar Studios, with the musicians treating both recording environments as important creative elements. One example appears on Objetos del Pasado, which developed from Wurst experimenting with a deliberately distorted drum sound. An unexpected interaction with a Space Echo produced an unusual effect that the group decided to preserve.

The finished recording incorporates ascending vocal harmonies reminiscent of Steely Dan, while other compositions feature smooth vocals, soft-rock arrangements and infectious percussion. Additional collaborators include La Lá, Andres Wurst, Amy O, Lovetempo, La Zorra Zapata and Celeste Krishna, contributing to the record's varied musical character.

Acquiring the Album on Vinyl and Digital Platforms

Released independently through Bandcamp, Arquetipas is available as a digital download for $12 or more, including MP3 and FLAC formats. Listeners can also purchase a 12-inch recycled vinyl edition for $30, featuring Fournet's original artwork and a complimentary digital copy. The album closes with Boyfriend Island, following tracks including Peter Pan, Captain Yes and Solo Mover Mi Cuerpo.

Fans interested in exploring the band's earlier work can purchase its complete four-release digital discography, including Cintas, Cintas Remixes and El Chari, for $27.20, representing a 20% discount.
