Teen prodigy Samuel Siskind draws inspiration from his hometown Santa Monica
As a talented composer and vocalist, Samuel's musical range is diverse, encompassing stage, recording, and film. As early as 2015, he joined the National Children’s Chorus and quickly rose to prominence, earning a youth principal role with the LA Opera in 2017.
The release of Siskind's debut album "Awake" in August 2023 was a pivotal moment in his professional journey, effectively highlighting the unique blend of jazz and classical music elements that have come to define his artistic vision.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a profoundly transformative effect on Siskind's life and artistic endeavors, prompting him to experiment with novel forms of creative expression through the fusion of poetry and songwriting.
His experiences with mental health and the struggles of his generation inspired many of the compositions on "Awake." The album features collaborations with Grammy-nominated artists Johnathan McCullough and Christopher Allen, who were drawn to Siskind's innovative style.
“I first knew Samuel as a principal singer with a strong baritone voice, but then found out that he composed as well,” McCullough said of the prodigy. “I asked to hear some of his pieces and knew right away that he had a very special talent. It is vitally important that the music we make spreads messages of what we are passionate about and Samuel does just that
Weezer, a highly acclaimed and beloved American rock band from Los Angeles, made a notable appearance at the prestigious Choral Arts Initiative in Newport Beach, California, where they welcomed young composer Samuel Siskind to join them as their featured guest composer.
The city of Santa Monica, California, served as a vibrant backdrop for Samuel Siskind's formative years, surrounding him with diverse musical influences and providing opportunities for him to tap into the area's rich cultural landscape.
Regarding his growing up years, he said of his hometown, "It’s just such an incredible area to live in, because there’s access to so many musical schools and incredible teachers. So I was very fortunate to start taking piano lessons and \[transitioning\] to singing \[and\] into composition. It’s a really great place and environment to be in."
At just four years old, he started playing the piano, laying the foundation for his future musical endeavors. This later led him to study composition with esteemed professor Ian Krouse at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“It’s really quite exciting and it’s always really surreal,” he said of bringing live music back to the Los Angeles community. “I remember being a little kid going to the LA Phil on Saturdays and watching … I’m this little kid watching the conductor and the composer and the musicians on stage, and for me to be standing on that stage now is really quite surreal.”
