Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Forge Pop History With First-Ever Collaboration

Two of pop music's biggest stars are taking their musical partnership to a new level. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have spent years building successful careers through emotional songwriting and distinctive performances. Their shared creative history has already brought them together onstage and in the recording studio. Now, an upcoming collaboration promises to mark an important milestone for both Grammy-winning artists.

A First for Both Artists

The collaboration centres on a remix of Rodrigo's song "expectations", scheduled for release on October 15, 2026, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Originally featured on her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, the track combines 1980s new wave influences with lyrics about relationship expectations.

Unlike a typical collaboration, the release represents two career firsts. Rodrigo is introducing her first official remix, while Roan is making her first featured appearance on another artist's recording.

Their decision to collaborate reflects an established professional relationship rather than an unexpected pairing. Producer Dan Nigro, who has helped shape both singers' musical identities, produced the new version through Interscope Records.

Years of Creative Connections

Their musical partnership began years before the upcoming remix, through live performances and shared recording projects. Roan supported Rodrigo during her earlier tours, including the Guts World Tour in 2024. She previously contributed backing vocals to several Rodrigo songs, including "lacy" and "obsessed".

Their relationship continued at Daisy Chain Fields, Rodrigo's inaugural women-led music festival in Irvine, California, on August 29. Featuring performers including Mitski, Doechii and Garbage, the event raised $20 million for 10 nonprofit organisations supporting women and girls.

That history helps explain why their first officially credited featured collaboration carries particular significance. Each singer has established a recognisable musical identity, making the remix an opportunity to combine their different approaches to pop music.

A Video Built Around Personality

Visual presentation provides another reason the release stands out. Director Bardia Zeinali, whose previous projects include work with Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat and KATSEYE, is overseeing the accompanying music video. Promotional photographs show the singers wearing 1980s-inspired outfits while posing on a yellow vintage car. Roan appears in her familiar white makeup, while Rodrigo wears oversized hair and a bow.

The imagery reflects the original song's retro influences and the performers' theatrical styles. Fans first suspected the collaboration after a German retailer briefly listed the remix before its official announcement. Rodrigo subsequently shared an Instagram audio teaser featuring a voice believed to belong to Roan. Their joint announcement on October 13 finally confirmed the speculation.

Success Creates Perfect Timing

Commercial momentum gives the collaboration another dimension. Rodrigo's latest album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 first-week units and topped charts in 17 countries. Her ongoing The Unraveled Tour has already sold more than one million tickets worldwide. Roan, meanwhile, is preparing two fundraising events in Los Angeles on October 21 and 22, featuring live performances and community activities.

Beyond streaming platforms, the remix will receive limited-edition seven-inch vinyl, CD and cassette releases. Physical copies are available for preorder through Rodrigo's official store, offering collectors another way to celebrate the collaboration.

Highlighting their mutual support and industry bond:

“She actually gives me so much advice on taking care of myself and being me in an industry that's so overwhelming sometimes. I really appreciate her.”
