Eight years have passed since Jim James last released a solo album, but the My Morning Jacket frontman is finally ready to return with a project that has been quietly taking shape for more than a decade. His fifth solo record, Wowed Out, will arrive on August 28 through ATO Records, led by the newly released single "Come Again" and its official music video. 

Rather than starting from scratch, James found inspiration in a forgotten collection of music he wrote during the early 2010s with longtime friend and composer Brian Reitzell. Fans may recognize Reitzell from his work on Sofia Coppola films, including Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides. The pair originally created the material for two film-scoring projects, but the recordings were never used and remained untouched for years. 

Unearthing a Cinematic Archive

The band frontman admitted he regularly revisited the archive but struggled to find a purpose for it. That changed in late 2025 when the unfinished ideas suddenly began fitting together. What had once been a collection of abandoned compositions gradually evolved into a complete album that James describes as deeply personal. 

Production remained entirely in James' hands, while Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar took care of the album's mix. Lazar has previously worked with artists including David Bowie, David Byrne, and Beck. Together, they shaped Wowed Out into a psychedelic album that also blends warm folk influences with reflective songwriting. 

Its first single, "Come Again," has an equally unusual backstory. The song originally served as background music for a scene set inside a teddy bear factory before James transformed it into a full vocal track. Instead of remaining a forgotten film cue, it became a hopeful song about rebuilding after difficult moments and continuing to search for happiness when life feels uncertain. 

Fighting the Noise of Modern Disconnection

James said the track reflects his own frustration with the direction he sees the world taking. Even so, he believes beauty still exists for those willing to keep looking. According to the singer, finding joy often means continuing to try "again and again and again," even when circumstances feel discouraging. 

That message carries throughout Wowed Out. James explained that the album's title refers to the overwhelming feeling created by constant technology, endless information, and daily distractions. While modern devices promise to keep people connected, he believes they often leave many feeling isolated instead. 

Because of that, James hopes listeners will reconnect with things that cannot be replaced by screens. Nature, love, music, kindness, and meaningful human connections remain powerful sources of comfort, he said, especially during periods of uncertainty. Jim James also revealed that music helped him overcome times when he felt lost or depressed, making the creative process both healing and rewarding. 

Summer and Autumn Milestones

Wowed Out marks James' first solo release since 2018's Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity. During the years between albums, he remained busy with My Morning Jacket, which released Is in 2025 and this year's charity collection Peacelands. 

Before his new album arrives, James will join the Music from the Films of Wes Anderson concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in July alongside Beck, Jackson Browne, Bill Murray, Britt Daniel, and other guests. He will also perform a solo acoustic set at Song Summit in Park City, Utah, on August 28, the same day Wowed Out officially releases.
