Themes and influences
The idea for American Romance came to Nelson during a time of deep thought. He found inspiration in George Harrison’s "All Things Must Pass," which gave him comfort and wisdom. This song, with its themes of change and impermanence, connected with Nelson’s wish to express his own views on life’s ever-changing nature through music.
The album’s title goes beyond just love stories. It covers a wide range of emotions—joy, sadness, heartbreak, and hope. Nelson sees the album as a tribute to the American landscape and the feelings it brings out—feelings shaped by constant travel and the many different experiences across the country.
Alongside Nelson’s songwriting and guitar skills, American Romance features a mix of talented musicians such as SistaStrings, Matt Chamberlain, and Sierra Ferrell. Other artists like Corey McCormick, Marly Muse, Russ Pahl, Chris Powell, Brian Wholan, Elanor Whitmore, and Stephen Wilson Jr. also contribute, each adding unique sounds to the album.
