Lexington’s Music in the Park delivered garage grit and jazzy swagger in Michigan

On August 8, The Gobies took the stage at Patrick Tierney Park in Lexington, Michigan, delivering the kind of garage rock that made people wonder if they should have been wearing ripped jeans and a leather jacket, even if they had never owned either.

Their set mixed original tracks with familiar hits, hitting that balance between "I’ve heard this before" and "What on earth is this?" The crowd, armed with folding chairs, coolers, and questionable dance moves, soaked it all in.

Dave Bennett closed the season with swing and swagger
A week later, on August 15, Lexington, Michigan, handed the mic to Dave Bennett, a man who could seemingly play any instrument except maybe a kazoo (though no one could be sure he didn’t).

His set brought jazz, swing, and high-energy flair that made people forget they were sitting in lawn chairs instead of a smoky club in the ‘40s. Bennett’s return proved to be a highlight, largely because watching him switch instruments mid-song was like watching a chef juggle knives, thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking.

Community spirit disguised as free entertainment
The Lexington Arts Council had organised the summer series, giving locals free concerts instead of, say, another committee meeting about parking meters. Supported by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and local businesses, the events turned into the civic equivalent of a casserole: everybody contributed something, and somehow it worked.

How people prepared for the shows
Concerts ran from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and while admission cost nothing, seating was BYOC: bring your chair. Umbrellas had been a smart choice too, since Michigan weather treated forecasts as polite suggestions. Food vendors were on hand, meaning no one had to pretend to enjoy the sandwiches they packed.
Why it mattered (besides the music)
Music in the Park wasn’t just about the sound; it was about bringing the whole town together for an evening of tunes, laughs, and the occasional mosquito battle. Whether they came for the riffs, the swing, or the snacks, Lexington, Michigan, offered it all with a side of small-town charm, and no cover charge.
