Blazing His Own Trail: Kingston Rossdale Steps Into Alternative Pop With Debut Release

A new name has entered the American music scene, bringing a familiar musical background and a personal approach to songwriting. Kingston Rossdale, the 20-year-old son of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, has officially launched his recording career. His debut single introduces a nostalgic guitar-driven sound influenced by alternative rock and contemporary pop. The release also marks the beginning of several upcoming projects, including his first EP and scheduled live performances in November.

Kingston releases debut single

Released on September 30, Right Side of the Moon explores young love and the emotional connection between two people who immediately recognise something special in each other. Originally developed from a demo Kingston recorded in London, the track was co-written with Zoe Hirsch and produced by Michael Kamerman. Its warm guitar arrangements combine influences from the 1980s and 1990s with modern production.

Rossdale drew inspiration from his girlfriend, describing their relationship as the foundation of the romantic song. He celebrated the release on Instagram, sharing its cover artwork, which attracted attention for his striking resemblance to his father. An accompanying cinematic music video, shot and co-directed by Kingston alongside Roger Artola, incorporates surreal imagery, including the musician wearing armour while playing guitar.

Musical influences shape his sound

Despite growing up with famous musical parents, Kingston has spent years developing his own creative direction. His mother, Gwen Stefani, achieved international success with No Doubt, while father Gavin Rossdale fronts British rock band Bush.

The former couple also share two younger sons, Zuma and Apollo. However, Kingston credits The Smashing Pumpkins, particularly Billy Corgan's songwriting on 1979, as a major inspiration behind his musical ambitions.

During a recent interview with Hit Parader, he highlighted Kamerman's influence, having known the Smallpools guitarist and producer since age 14. Kingston began writing music around 13 and has since accumulated approximately 200 songs, initially encouraged by positive reactions to a birthday song written for his girlfriend.

Debut EP arrives November

His forthcoming EP, Louise Street, is scheduled for release on November 6, following recording sessions that began in November last year. Kingston worked closely with Kamerman throughout production, experimenting extensively with guitar tones and individual arrangements. A Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Firebird became particularly important instruments during recording, helping establish a consistent sound throughout the project.

Stefani previously praised her son's songwriting abilities, expressing admiration for the quality of his compositions. The upcoming collection will further introduce listeners to Kingston's nostalgic influences and personal musical identity.

First live performances confirmed

Following his debut EP, Kingston will make his first scheduled live appearance on November 8 at the Voodoo Room inside House of Blues in San Diego. Another performance will follow at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on November 10, marking his introduction to audiences as a recording artist.

These concerts represent another important milestone as the young musician moves beyond studio production and begins establishing his presence independently of his family's musical legacy.

"Everybody's sound, especially mine, is always evolving as time goes on. But I obsessed over tones so hard. Making this EP, literally like locking myself in the studio all day, all night, just trying to figure out each section piece by piece. So, I feel really proud of the tones and the sound that I got."
