Journey turns 50!

April 1, 2025, marks the 50th anniversary of Journey’s self-titled debut album, kicking off the band’s remarkable career. Initially formed as the Golden Gate Rhythm Section to back other artists, the San Francisco-based group quickly switched gears to create their own music. The band, formed in 1973, included Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon from Santana, along with Prairie Prince, Ross Valory, and George Tickner. By the end of the year, they decided on the name Journey, suggested by a roadie.

As the band grew, drummer Aynsley Dunbar joined, bringing experience from working with Frank Zappa and John Mayall. Their debut album, recorded in late 1974 at Columbia Records' San Francisco studio, was produced by Roy Halee, known for his work with Simon & Garfunkel. The album combined progressive rock and jazz fusion, with instrumental tracks and complex compositions. Despite the band’s musical skill, the album didn’t perform well commercially, peaking at No. 138 on the Billboard 200.

Lineup shifts and musical transformation
After their debut, Journey continued to refine their sound. Shortly after the album’s release, guitarist George Tickner left to study medicine at Stanford. The remaining members pressed on, releasing two more albums in the progressive rock style before making a big change. In 1977, with the help of their manager Herbie Herbert, Journey brought in Steve Perry as their new lead vocalist, marking a shift toward a more melodic, radio-friendly rock style.

This change was key to their success. Perry’s arrival, along with later lineup changes like Steve Smith replacing Aynsley Dunbar in 1978 and Jonathan Cain replacing Gregg Rolie in 1980, pushed Journey into their most commercially successful period. The band’s sound evolved into the arena rock style that became their signature, leading to multi-platinum albums and worldwide fame in the 1980s.

Enduring challenges and continued success
Decades later, Journey remains a lasting force in rock music, though not without challenges. While the band still tours globally, recent events have tested them. During a performance at RodeoHouston, a fire broke out on stage, causing the concert to end abruptly. Drummer Deen Castronovo later revealed that the fire, caused by an electrical issue near the drum riser, was a serious threat. Thankfully, the crew and band members were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.
