Chance the Rapper’s “Star Line” makes a surprise stop at Lollapalooza
After almost ten years away from Lollapalooza's main stage, Chance the Rapper surprised fans with a 15-minute set that was both nostalgic and a preview for his album. It was also a little confusing.
The crowd left entertained, intrigued, and possibly unsure whether they had just attended a concert or wandered into a gallery sponsored by cargo shorts.

New sound, new Chance (and fewer acid raps)
Forget the acid-washed gospel of _Coloring Book,_ _Star Line_ is here to show off Chance’s deeply personal and experimental side, which means piano ballads, sharp synths, and the occasional reminder that Chicago invented moshing.
Inspired by his trips to Ghana, Jamaica, and, critically, art fairs because nothing says "hip-hop evolution" like the Venice Biennale, the album promises a global blend of soul, hip-hop, and musical passport stamps.
This is Chance as you have never heard him before: introspective, analytical, and maybe just a touch boujee. Think TED Talk with a beat drop.
In true modern artist fashion, Chance is not just releasing an album. He is releasing a lifestyle. Forget standard hoodies and T-shirts. Star Line merch includes varsity jackets, cargo shorts, and yoga leggings.
Because what is the point of listening to an introspective hip-hop album if you are not in downward dog, wearing Chance-branded spandex?
The lead single "Tree" featuring Lil Wayne and Smino is already out, mixing cannabis meditations with a critique of legalization’s impact on communities of color. It is clever, catchy, and possibly the only single on the market you could smoke along to both ironically and politically.

Backstage nostalgia in Grant Park
After the set, Chance slipped backstage to watch Doechii and Mk.gee, just another Chicago kid supporting the arts. For Chance, Grant Park is not just a stage.
It is the same ground where he cut his teeth at high school open mics. Now, nearly six years after The Big Day, he is back with Star Line.
Whether it is a masterpiece or another Big Day situation, we will find out on August 15. Either way, Chance knows how to keep Chicago, and our yoga leggings, waiting.
