Stories woven into song
Each one-hour round featured three songwriters presenting original material that revealed both imagination and honesty. Steve Westbrook described how his early poetry evolved into songwriting, with influences as wide-ranging as Western films that shaped one of his first pieces.
Marshall Watkins, meanwhile, shared how an open-mic performance at a past festival sparked heartfelt responses from listeners, confirming the power of songs rooted in personal history. These performances showed that songs thrive when they speak from genuine human emotion.

The festival also placed strong emphasis on education and growth for songwriters of all ages. Workshops included Clay Mills’s "Seven Proven Ways to Make Your Song Unforgettable," which offered practical guidance for refining creative work. Mississippi native Sean Gasaway further encouraged younger writers to pursue their musical journeys, underscoring the role of mentorship in sustaining artistic traditions.
Dave Cornelius added another layer of inspiration by recounting how rediscovered cassette tapes from his youth reminded him to embrace his individuality.
Additional highlights enriched the festival’s schedule, such as a youth songwriting session supported by the Jimmie Rodgers Foundation and recording opportunities at The MAX.
These moments reinforced the festival’s role not just as a stage for music, but as a platform for community engagement and creative exploration. As the weekend drew to a close, performances by respected songwriters including Clay Mills, Sean Gasaway, Stephen Lee Veal, and Lach Thornton brought the event full circle.
Together, they affirmed the mission of the festival: to celebrate the art of storytelling through song and ensure its lasting impact for future generations.
