BLK ODYSSY's musical evolution: From folk-rock to '1-800 Fantasy'
Well before rebranding himself as BLK ODYSSY, Juwan Elcock grew up immersed in gospel music, '70s funk, gangsta rap, and neo-soul. The turning point in his career came in 2015 when Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" inspired him to shift from deep-South folk-rock to bolder musical directions, bringing guitarist Alejandro Rios along for the ride. This diverse musical background is evident in "1-800-FANTASY," which blends early 2000s pop-rock and landfill indie with R&B, hip-hop, funk, and jazz.

"1-800-FANTASY" is a concept album that takes listeners on a coming-of-age journey, exploring themes of desire, obsession, heartache, and mental health. This ambitious project includes successful singles like "Want You," "XXX" featuring Wiz Khalifa, "Stank Rose" with Joey Bada$$, and "Changes." The album also features collaborations with Harry Edohoukwa and Jackie Giroux.
Elcock, who sees himself more as a storyteller than a songwriter, designed this album around a young teenager trying to win over a woman on a phone sex hotline. As her seductive voice asks, "What's your fantasy?," listeners are pulled into a story that grows more unsettling as the protagonist becomes increasingly obsessed over the course of 13 tracks.
Despite the focus on unrequited love, "1-800-FANTASY" remains uplifting, with tracks like "XXX," "Phase," and "Changes" featuring bright, sunny melodies.
Set to embark on The Fantasy House Tour starting August 31 in Austin, Texas, BLK ODYSSY will bring his innovative soundscapes to audiences across North America and Europe, with stops in cities like Manchester, London, Ghent, Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona.
